Rail Transportation Services
STraffic’s railway transportation business has been advancing Korea’s railway infrastructure through world-class technology and extensive field-proven engineering expertise.
By successfully deploying electronic interlocking systems for the Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway and the Seoul Metropolitan high-speed rail network, as well as train control systems for urban railways, STraffic has established the highest standards of safety and reliability.
Going beyond the successful adoption of advanced technologies from overseas, STraffic has also played a leading role in the localization of railway signaling technologies in Korea.
STraffic developed KTCS-M, the Korean Train Control System for urban railways, by localizing CBTC technology for driverless train operations. Following the successful completion of a pilot project on Seoul’s Ilsan Line, KTCS-M is now set to be fully deployed on the new Busan-Yangsan Line.
STraffic has also developed KTCS2-2, a Korean Train Control System designed to be compatible with ETCS/ERTMS Level 2 standards. The system can be applied across Korea’s railway network, including both high-speed and conventional railways.
Covering the entire railway signaling domain, from wayside and onboard signaling systems to centralized traffic control, STraffic provides integrated railway solutions and continues to lead the way toward a safer and smarter future for rail transportation.
KTCS-M (CBTC) - Next-Gen Metro Signaling
KRTCS was launched in 2010 as a national R&D project with the goal of localizing Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology for urban railways. STraffic participated in its development after taking over the related technologies and businesses from Samsung SDS and POSCO ICT.
In 2014, the development of the core technologies was successfully completed, followed by the establishment of the Korean Railway Standard KRS SG 0069. In 2019, the system was renamed KTCS-M (Korean Train Control System for Metro)and has since been established as Korea’s standard signaling system for urban railways.
STraffic’s ST-KMX is a next-generation urban railway signaling solution based on KTCS (Korean Train Control System), Korea’s Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology. It was developed to maximize the safety, punctuality, and operational efficiency of urban railway systems.
STraffic’s ST-KMXis a proprietary technology-based solution in which the entire range of onboard and wayside equipment is designed in-house. With both hardware and software developed internally, it delivers a high level of technological competitiveness and maintenance efficiency.
The system has also achieved SIL4 (Safety Integrity Level 4)certification, the highest level of functional safety certification in railway signaling, ensuring a high degree of reliability and safety for both passengers and operators.
ST-KMX has successfully completed technical validation through pilot operations on the Ilsan Line in the Seoul Metropolitan Areaand is now being deployed on the Busan-Yangsan Line, Korea’s first commercial railway line to adopt a Korean-developed CBTC system, which is scheduled to open in December 2026.
Through these achievements, STraffic has successfully localized an urban railway signaling market that has traditionally relied heavily on overseas technologies, while establishing a strong foundation for further expansion into urban railway markets both in Korea and overseas.
